November sees the start of the bare root planting season, a great way to make a start on next year’s glorious garden!
So what is ‘bare root’? The term refers to plants which are sold in their dormant, out of season state. It’s a time when they’re not trying to grow leaves or flowers. This means that when they’re planted they can use 100 per cent of the available nutrients to develop strong roots and get well established. You can read more about bare root planting in winter here.
You may have seen our bare root rose giveaway with Harkness Roses on Facebook or Instagram. But we know that not everybody is on social media - so we thought we'd celebrate bare root planting season with a second giveaway for rose lovers, here in our Journal.
You could win a prize consisting of our RHS-endorsed rose and root fork and our RHS-endorsed rose pruner. The fork is the perfect tool to gently aerate the roots of established plants in autumn, to improve absorption of nutrients and prevent waterlogging over the winter. The pruner has a clever cut-and-hold design: as you complete the cut, the cut stem is held in a gripping mechanism, allowing you to extract it without having to handle those thorns. It's the ideal for rose pruning in winter or early spring.
It's a bundle worth £62.98, and it's the perfect way to care for your roses over the winter, ready to burst forth in beautiful bloom next summer.
GOOD LUCK!

I love the roses in my garden because they are at the front of the house in front of the kitchen window so when they flower I have a lovely view of them from the kitchen, and I think they make the front of the house look so beautiful.
Since moving to this bungalow I’ve been moving roses from under established trees, really bringing them back to life. Still got a few more to do and these tools will be really helpful. I especially love the dark red ones, but i don’t know their names :-(. I also look forward to planting some new ones once I’m finished.
This has to be the most interesting pair of gardening tools that I have seen in a long time. I would be very interested in trying them out on more than just roses too.
I would love to have a beautiful display of roses .l inherited a run down garden and I am starting from scratch.
Gertrude Jekyll is my favourite rise of all. A glorious scent, plentiful flowers, fabulous colour, resistant to disease, perfect for cutting – a winner on all counts. To have a rose such as this one never fails to lift the spirits!
