November sees the start of the bare root planting season, a great way to make a start on next year’s glorious garden!
So what is ‘bare root’? The term refers to plants which are sold in their dormant, out of season state. It’s a time when they’re not trying to grow leaves or flowers. This means that when they’re planted they can use 100 per cent of the available nutrients to develop strong roots and get well established. You can read more about bare root planting in winter here.
You may have seen our bare root rose giveaway with Harkness Roses on Facebook or Instagram. But we know that not everybody is on social media - so we thought we'd celebrate bare root planting season with a second giveaway for rose lovers, here in our Journal.
You could win a prize consisting of our RHS-endorsed rose and root fork and our RHS-endorsed rose pruner. The fork is the perfect tool to gently aerate the roots of established plants in autumn, to improve absorption of nutrients and prevent waterlogging over the winter. I have always loved roses, especially the ones with a strong and beautiful fragrance. Their scent brings me calm, helps me relax, and gives me a sense of peace in my mind. I’m working on building a rose garden at home, and every time a new rose blooms, it feels like a little moment of joy. My favourite roses are the richly scented climbers that fill the air with perfume.
I have been given roses for special occasions by other people. It would be lovely to win this myself !
We have lots of different roses in our garden all symbolising a special person or event. Rule is they can be any colour but must be scented. My favourite is a vibrant coral orange one that grows round the front door.
A Rose by the Nose is a Pleasant experience.
