November sees the start of the bare root planting season, a great way to make a start on next year’s glorious garden!
So what is ‘bare root’? The term refers to plants which are sold in their dormant, out of season state. It’s a time when they’re not trying to grow leaves or flowers. This means that when they’re planted they can use 100 per cent of the available nutrients to develop strong roots and get well established. You can read more about bare root planting in winter here.
You may have seen our bare root rose giveaway with Harkness Roses on Facebook or Instagram. But we know that not everybody is on social media - so we thought we'd celebrate bare root planting season with a second giveaway for rose lovers, here in our Journal.
You could win a prize consisting of our RHS-endorsed rose and root fork and our RHS-endorsed rose pruner. The fork is the perfect tool to gently aerate the roots of established plants in autumn, to improve absorption of nutrients and prevent waterlogging over the winter. The pruner has a clever cut-and-hold design: as you complete the cut, the cut stem is held in a gripping mechanism, allowing you to extract it without having to handle those thorns. It's the ideal for rose pruning in winter or early spring.
It's a bundle worth £62.98, and it's the perfect way to care for your roses over the winter, ready to burst forth in beautiful bloom next summer.
GOOD LUCK!

My Mum grew a lovely “Blue Moon” and I cannot seem to grow it. But I have managed to grow a beautiful Floribunda “Iceberg” in memory of Mum (passed in Oct 2012) and take a cutting that’s also growing well.
My Grandad was a huge lover of roses, with a front garden full of them, the scent was incredible, to win these items would be a chance to recreate this magic that I had growing up!

In my garden I have 3 roses and 2 climbing over the Arch which I inherited when I bought this house 23years ago and I prune them once a year and I am rewarded with masses of flowers every year.Sadly only one of them has a lovely scent I would love to win this rose so I have another scented rose. I have bought a few small burgon and ball tools and feel they really are good quality and wish I could afford to buy more.
Looks a great pruner to win for my roses
