November sees the start of the bare root planting season, a great way to make a start on next year’s glorious garden!
So what is ‘bare root’? The term refers to plants which are sold in their dormant, out of season state. It’s a time when they’re not trying to grow leaves or flowers. This means that when they’re planted they can use 100 per cent of the available nutrients to develop strong roots and get well established. You can read more about bare root planting in winter here.
You may have seen our bare root rose giveaway with Harkness Roses on Facebook or Instagram. But we know that not everybody is on social media - so we thought we'd celebrate bare root planting season with a second giveaway for rose lovers, here in our Journal.
You could win a prize consisting of our RHS-endorsed rose and root fork and our RHS-endorsed rose pruner. The fork is the perfect tool to gently aerate the roots of established plants in autumn, to improve absorption of nutrients and prevent waterlogging over the winter. The damask rose has the most wonderful scent and the buds make a lovely relaxing tea!
My favourite rose is Handel. It is a well behaved climbing rose and is truly beautiful .
I love all my roses in my garden, all different and all uniquely themselves and all so prolific. My friends love them too, and tell me how unexpectantly long their blossoms last in vases gracing their homes.
Roses are red,
But in Yorkshire they’re white,
And whatever the colour,
They’re a flower to excite,
And clipping the buds with some new secateurs,
Is one of life’s joys,
For him and for her.
Phyllis Byde is my favorite climbing rose I just love the delicate colours of it and it’s not to vigorous either.
