Go wild For Mother’s Day! Win gardening goodies with Seedball

Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and we thought this year we’d go a little wild!

Taking inspiration from the wildflower illustration on our beautiful new British Meadow design in the RHS Gifts for Gardeners series, we’ve teamed up with our friends at Seedball. Read on and you could win a bundle of gardening goodies which not only will be loved by any marvellous mum, but also by the wildlife in your garden.

Seedball hope to inspire a wildlife gardening revolution while providing a very handy way of going about it!

Ana and Emily, the creators of Seedball, are both working mothers with three small children between them. They’ve been juggling work and home-schooling during these uncertain times with getting their message into the world - that we really can make a huge difference to wildlife by growing wildflowers in our outdoor spaces.

Seedball is a non-profit company on a massive mission to help increase the abundance of British wildflowers and the wildlife that depend upon them.

Ana and Emily met at Aberdeen University in 2010, where both were studying PhDs in conservation. At the time they wanted to grow wildflowers for the bees but were not having much success. They discovered seed balls through the work of Masanobu Fukuoka and spent two years perfecting their own, initially by hand-rolling them on Ana’s kitchen table.

By 2012 they had created the wildflower Seedball and over the years the range of mixes has increased. Each mix contains only native wildflowers and has been chosen by experts in the field they aim to help.

The Seedballs themselves are made of clay, peat-free compost, seeds and chilli powder to deter pests. Seedballs are super easy to use. They just need scattering on top of bare soil in the spring or autumn, and watering if there is not much rain. Wildflowers will start to germinate in the first, second and even third season, so a wildflower patch will grow and change over the years, supporting and benefiting many different types of wildlife.

Seedball believe that if we can all better use whatever space we have available to us (whether that’s a back garden, balcony, window box or little patio) together we can have a hugely beneficial impact on our local ecosystems.

The last 50 years have been witness to huge declines in pollinators and other garden wildlife, but together we can really do something to reverse this.

Conservation is at the heart and soul of Seedball, who want to fill the world with wildflowers and they hope to start with your garden! Check out the range at

The prize

You could win a prize bundle consisting of: an RHS Gifts for Gardeners British Meadow pruner and holster gift set; an RHS Gifts for Gardeners British Meadow Kneelo® garden kneeler; and a fabulous Seedball gift box with Mum’s Meadow, Shade and Bee Mix wildflower gift tins.

Together it's a prize worth £59.97. We're giving away a matching bundle on our social feeds too, so don't forget to keep an eye out for posts by @burgonandball and @seedball!

The British Meadow design is the newest collection in our RHS Gifts for Gardeners series. Designed by Burgon & Ball, the British Meadow pattern incorporates illustrations dating back to 1815, specially selected from the RHS Lindley Library of historic botanical art. The tools in the gift sets carry our regular RHS guarantee, of ten years on the cutting tools and a lifetime guarantee on the trowel and fork.

Here's a little background about the Seedball mixes we have up for grabs:

Mum's Meadow
Native wildflowers that are most likely to thrive in the nutrient rich soils commonly found in gardens. Each ball contains approximately 30 seeds per ball from a mix of Meadow buttercup, Oxeye daisy, Red clover, Self heal and Yarrow. Each tin has 20 seed balls, enough to cover 1 metre square in a garden bed or 3-5 medium sized pots (leave at least 10cm between each ball).

Bee Mix
A mix of native wildflowers that bees will just love! Each seed ball contains approximately 30 seeds from a mix of Birdsfoot Trefoil, Foxglove, Red Clover, Viper’s Bugloss and Wild Marjoram – all recommended as bee-friendly plants by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.

Shade Mix
Ideal for shadier areas of your garden and balcony. While these will struggle in total shade (as would all flowers!), this mix is designed for spots which receive only dappled sun or sun for just one part of the day (although will grow equally well in areas of full sun). Each ball contains approximately 30 seeds from a mixture of Bellflower, Forget-me-not, Meadow buttercup, Meadowsweet, Oxeye daisy, Ragged robin and Red campion.
