A passion for planting: new RHS-endorsed planting tools

This spring we’re indulging our passion for planting! We have four new planting tools joining our line-up of RHS-endorsed tools – and we just can’t wait to get busy with them.

Planting has to be one of the more creative and satisfying tasks in the garden. We always think of it as painting with plants. You consider colours and textures, size and shape, where you want bold contrast where you want subtle shading. And when it comes to edibles, we’re thinking about those bountiful baskets of veg, those pots of jam, those crispy fresh salads. Planting brings infinite possibilities, and it never fails to bring us joy.

To make planting even more special, we’re introducing three new trowels and a short-handled perennial spade, all new for this year. We’ve created these tools to make particular planting tasks easier, and added eye-catching design to bring the wow factor. Even better, all these new tools carry our lifetime guarantee, so you know you’re buying a tool which will last.

Kicking off, our RHS-endorsed Groundbreaker trowel complements the design of our Groundbreaker spade. This spade was named Best Garden Product in the House Beautiful Awards when we launched it back in 2016, and it remains a thing of beauty, as well as offering exceptional digging capability. The Groundbreaker trowel echoes design of this distinctive spade, with a pointed, sharpened head to slice easily through stony, heavy or challenging ground.

Next, the eye-catching shape of the new RHS-endorsed planting trowel is simply irresistible. The short, wide head has a pointed, sharpened tip to slice easily through ground. The ergonomic design makes this trowel a delight to use; the head is in line with the handle rather than angled, making digging easier. This versatile trowel is useful for shallower digging and scooping when planting bulbs, bedding or plug plants, and is ideal for container gardening.

Thirdly, our new RHS-endorsed weeding trowel offers the last word in versatility. An extremely effective weeding tool, this trowel re-imagines the existing RHS-endorsed container knife, but with a sleek mirror-polished stainless steel finish to make it sharper, smoother and altogether more covetable. There’s a choice of serrated or straight blades to cut roots, and a notch for tackling long tap roots. The trowel is also perfect for planting, with a slender shape that’s ideal for digging in dense planting, and a handy depth gauge for planting bulbs. This extremely useful all-rounder is ideal for containers as well as tightly-planted borders, and we think it will find many fans. This trowel is currently available in-store only, due to the issues around selling bladed items online.

Finally, the new RHS-endorsed short-handled perennial spade retains the distinctive head shape of the hugely popular RHS-endorsed perennial spade, but in response to feedback from gardeners it features a shorter handle. This design update offers great control, giving greater precision and enhanced digging power to gardeners who like to get up close to their plants. It’s ideal for digging while kneeling.

We’ve rather fallen in love with these new RHS-endorsed stainless steel planting tools. We’ve found them to be highly efficient making planting easier and even more enjoyable. We hope you enjoy them too. Happy planting!
