As the days get longer and we start to see a glimmer of sun through this wettest of winters, we find ourselves getting excited about the season ahead. We’ve already sown chilis because they need a long growing season. But what else could be finding its way from our plot to our plate this year?
What could be better for grow-your-own inspiration than a beautiful new book from Stephanie Hafferty, no-dig gardening specialist and homesteading expert? Stephanie’s new book ‘The Productive Garden’ hits bookshelves at the end of March – and you could be one of the very first to get your hands on a copy!
The Productive Garden
We’re big fans of Stephanie’s down-to-earth approach to running a productive organic garden. From what to sow and what to cook with it, to fragrant lotions and potions to keep body and home clean and smelling sweet, Stephanie’s books cover it all.
You might remember some time ago we road-tested her Divine Beetroot Soup recipe. To this day it's one of the most delicious soups we’ve ever ladled into a bowl! We can’t wait to try out some of the suggestions – both for garden and for kitchen – from the new book.

Divided into three sections, the new book 'The Productive Garden' covers how to plan, grow and use your garden’s harvest to ensure year-round productivity. As an extra bonus, it features luscious photography from the brilliant Jason Ingram - some of which Stephanie has kindly allowed us to feature here. You can find out more about the new book on Stephanie’s website.
A gardening giveaway
As always, for this giveaway we’ll match Stephanie’s book with a prize of some Burgon & Ball tools. Our new RHS-endorsed BoronGreen range seems appropriate, as it as been created to offer a tool range that treads more lightly on the Earth.
The BoronGreen tools use boron steel made from 80 per cent recycled steel. We’ve just done some calculations on the tools’ carbon footprint, and in the range’s first year of production, the switch from virgin steel to 80 per cent recycled has saved an astonishing 19,113 tonnes of carbon! We won a sustainability award for BoronGreen last year but it was quite a thing to do the maths and work out the effect the switch has had.

So to partner with Stephanie’s book, we have a trio of BoronGreen tools that are perfect for Stephanie’s no-dig approach. There’s a trowel, a transplanter, and a dibber. All ideal for getting young plants started and then getting them planted out, ready to grow for a season of productive harvesting.
Together the book and tools make a prize worth over £50, so read on and enter now!
