Free shear sharpening service on Wednesday 27 July 2016

We're looking forward to exhibiting next week at the National Sheep Association (NSA) Sheep Event 2016, and will offer a free shear sharpening service to visitors.

The event takes place on Wednesday 27 July at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, Worcestershire, so there’s still time to dig out those Burgon & Ball hand shears and get ready to bring them along to us on the big day.

As the world's oldest and largest manufacturer of sheep shears, we have centuries of expertise in steel under our belt, and we have been making cast steel hand shears in Sheffield since 1730. Currently in the factory there is a combined total of over 200 years of metalworking experience, and at the NSA Sheep Event some of our experts will be showing how our shears are finished by hand, with demonstrations of skills including bending, setting and grinding.

John Osowski is one of our team who will be at the show. He’s been with us for decades, and works in the Sheffield factory with his brother Ken, who specialises in the early stages of shear production. Together they have worked on hundreds of thousands of pairs of shears, and this is why our shears are so special; individually hand crafted and still produced in Sheffield.

In addition to the demonstrations of hand finishing, we'll be offering a free of charge sharpening service for Burgon & Ball shears. Show visitors are invited to call in at Stand 115 in the Wye Hall to give their shears a brilliant edge and to find out about our expertise in hand shears.

To watch our sheep shears being hand finished, and to get your own shears sharpened for free by the professionals, come and visit us on Stand 115 (Wye Hall) at the NSA Sheep Event on Wednesday 27 July. For more information, please visit www.nationalsheep.org.uk/nsa-sheep-event.

Burgon & Ball sponsors Irish sheep shearing record attempt

We were pleased recently to sponsor an attempt to smash the Irish record for hand shearing sheep, at this year’s annual Connacht Spring Show at County Mayo’s Ballinrobe racecourse.

Organiser Paddy Rock explains: “At the show in 2013 we set the record for the most people shearing a sheep in the same place at the same time, with an amazing 154 shearers lined up and in action for one five-minute period. This year the aim has been to get the well-known shearing dynasties of County Mayo involved, to really boost the numbers of participants.”

Paddy spent the weeks prior to the big day searching out families with shearing skills across several generations, and incredibly he managed to find not just one but two families with five members who can shear together.

Paul Payne (above, right), financial director at Burgon & Ball, who attended the event and officiated at the record attempt, says: “It’s wonderful to see these traditional techniques being handed down from father to sons and daughters. Our classic design of shears for hand shearing has remained the same since we started manufacturing them in 1730, and it’s good to know that the timeless skill of hand shearing a sheep also continues unchanged since those early days.”

On the day the oldest and youngest participating shearers were rewarded with a set of Burgon & Ball classic sheep shears. The youngest shearer present was just 14 years of age, and he’s already been shearing for three years.

And the record attempt? Unfortunately on the day a new record was just missed. However, the thousands of people who attended the show enjoyed perfect weather, good food with cookery demonstrations throughout the day, and mighty craic – and there’s always next year.

All funds raised in the process of the record attempt have been donated to Western Alzheimer’s in Ballindine, a charity which provides a complete service of care to families affected by Alzheimer’s in the western region of Ireland.
